So recently, i came across this newly engaged couple on BellaNaija.com. I was  reading their article, like awww cute couple, nice guy doing the right thing, cool, cool, just the way it should be done. And then I saw the last sentence “The couple have been dating since 2011.” That instance something transpired in my Nigerian mind. I was reminded of couples that I meet on the daily in “amuruika”( chigurl voice) that proudly say to me “we’ve been together for a looong  time girl, we’ve been dating for like some eight years now”.

I thought to myself  what is going on in this girl’s medulla oblongata?. Is patience still considered a virtue when a young lady, with complete set of teeth and marriage potentials dates one guy for 6, 7 or even 12 years without the guy ever making any move or step towards marriage? How long is too long? Girls! Will you be willing to date a guy for 12 YEARS BIKO?

Here are three bloggers from The divineafricanqueens blog, that i absolutely love by the way and here’s their take on the issue; how long is too long?

Christine’s theory is that after a year, you should know whether or not you love that person and are willing to spend the rest of your life with them. However, she is willing to give someone another year for a chance to get their life together, figure out what they want, play house, or find someone else. Basically she has a max of 2 years before she moves on.

Ify’s theory is that by a year, a couple should know if they are going in the direction of marriage or not. 4 months into the relationship you should know if you love that person or not. After the initial year, she thinks that a 6 month window is available to get engaged. If he exceeds the 6 month window, it does not necessarily mean the end, she is definitely willing to give more time because life can be unexpected.

Nkeiru’s theory is that I will give someone 18 months maximum. By the end of that time frame, you should be in love with that person and moving towards marriage. If the feeling is not mutual, then I think it is time to move on. However, I am willing to give someone a lil’ bit more time than that. Simply because life is complicated and you never know what kind of curve ball might be thrown your way. By a years end I should definitely know where the relationship is going, but I will give a guy a year and a half to get it together.

I still think the couple is cute, so…
